Resin bound stone is regarded as a luxury product however in some cases, it could be the cheapest option of all the decorative surfaces in circumstances where it is being used to renew an existing, tired concrete or tarmac surface. It can be difficult to quantify the cost on a square metre basis since it varies dependant on the size of the area, the depth of the installation and the state of the sub-surface. The average price is approximately £55.00 net per square metre as a base guideline.
Resin bound stone is generally very easy to maintain. A regular sweep should keep the surface in good condition however if heavy soiling has occurred, the surface can be jet-washed using a fan setting with a maximum of 200 bar rating. We recommend that the jet is kept at least 200mm from the surface.
On light coloured surfaces, tyre marks could have a potential impact. Please contact us as we do have a specialist degreasing product that may assist in this instance.
Resin bound stone is the product of mixing kiln dried aggregate with a two part polyurethane resin in a forced action mixer. The resulting mixture is then trowelled onto a suitable surface at a depth of 18mm generally
The main advantage of this solution is the durability, smooth look and permeability which makes it the number one choice.
Resin bound stone can be cheaper than the alternatives in circumstances where there is an existing suitable base. This is often utilised where the existing base is no longer aesthetically pleasing as the resin bound stone can be applied with minimal preparation. In doing this, the life of the existing surface can be extended by a minimum of 10 years.
Not only this but when resin bound stone is considered in light of all of its benefits and longevity, the product is still a better choice. It will cost around the same amount as block paving, tarmac or concrete but it has the added advantage that it uses natural aggregates which therefore never fades and if properly installed, will have at least double the life expectancy than alternate options
Many are aware that there are two types of resin readily available on the market. There is the non-UV stable which is otherwise known as ‘aromatic’ and there is the UV stable otherwise known as ‘aliphatic’.
Both types of resin are equally strong, durable and fit for purpose however the fundamental difference is that the non-stable blend has the potential to darken when exposed to sunlight. Many immediately discredit this kind of resin as a result of this however, it is important to highlight that it has definitely earned its place in the market – as aforementioned, it may be true that as the resin darkens, it can give the impression that the stones have yellowed but there are a number of stone colour blends in which this colour variation would not be noticeable – generally, dark colours such as greys and browns tend to work best with this resin.
Whilst it is true that resin bound stone has the potential to be installed onto any base, its durability and longevity is oftentimes the fundamental drawback in circumstances where the product is laid onto an unsuitable pre-existing surface.
Resin bound stone can be used to increase the lifespan of pre-existing concrete and tarmacadam bases which is fantastic as it economically repurposes what would otherwise be an overused, tired driveway/patio/path but many clients require the creation of a suitable sub-base/base.
In the event that there is not a suitable sub-surface in place, it is advisable to go ahead with the prerequisite preparatory works. In order to do so, it is necessary to remove the existing surface and to excavate to the desired depth.
Following this, MOT Type 1 ought to be put down to a depth of 150mm followed by a permeable tarmac (14mm open binder at 125 penetration) at 80mm to allow for a fully porous and functional installation.
Upon completion of the tarmac works, the resin bound stone can be laid to a depth of 18-20mm.
Most maintenance can be avoided by regularly sweeping, every 6-12 weeks with a hard-bristled brush.
A pressure washer can be used but it is recommended that a fan-type setting should be used with cold water only. It is imperative to keep the washer at least 200mm from the surface.
In the event that there is a heavy ingress of dirt, there are specialist chemicals on the market to clean these types of surfaces. This can be done either at home or by a professional.
It is recommended that every couple of years, the driveway is re-sealed with resin in order to increase its lifespan and to restore its original shiny, wet look.
It is recommended that heavy metal objects ought to avoid direct contact with resin bound stone (i.e. skip/car jack).
In the event of an oil, petrol or diesel spill, it is best to deal with it immediately in order to avoid any potential staining.
Dry steering may cause the resin bound stone to erode and thus require repair works – it is advisable to avoid this where possible.
In cold weather, salt can be used to prevent freezing. It is advisable to thoroughly rinse all salts from the surface upon completion of the cold weather.
If there happens to be snow, be sure to use a plastic shovel to remove it to avoid damaging the surface.
